Gary Coleman Gender Bend: Avenue Q Still Looking for Funny Ladies

Who knew we’d be spending so much of our week talking about Gary Coleman?

Although an earlier job posting from Avenue Q casting director Cindy Tolan indicated that a man would now be playing the role of the former child star when the show restarts at off-Broadway’s New World Stages, a new posting indicates a change of heart.

While searching for an African-American woman to be the understudy to three Avenue Q parts (Gary Coleman, the dual roles of Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut and the dual roles of Mrs. T. and Girl Bear), the notice indicates that “the role of Gary Coleman will revert back to being played by a female actor.”

So, will a woman or a man wind up playing the part when the show starts performances on October 9? May the best Gary win!
